SPARKS Literacy Center, Inc. is a learning center dedicated to helping students and parents determine and address underlying causes of difficulties in learning to read, spell, comprehend, write or who have trouble doing homework without tears and hours of work.  We seek to identify the causes of these problems with in-depth assessment, instruction, and encouragement to students who are experiencing any of these challenges.

SPARKS Literacy Center, Inc. offers specialized, multi-sensory programs to students who need different teaching strategies for success, for students with dyslexia, auditory processing problems or other learning challenges.  Not all issues are academic in nature.  We are very happy to support students, one-on-one, who may be exceptionally bright, but unable to meet their personal goals in large group settings.  We also strive to offer encouragement, resources, contacts, and teaching techniques to the parents of our students.

SPARKS Literacy Center, Inc. welcomes students of all ages from kindergarten, to teens, to adults.  We serve students from all academic settings, including homeschooled students, as well as those in private, charter, or traditional public schools.  We are open by appointment week-days from 8:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m.  The staff of highly qualified, credentialed teachers specialize in developing students' abilities with professional skill and enthusiastic and encouraging personalities.  We view each student as a very special and unique person with many talents, abilities, and great potential to develop new skills.

SPARKS Literacy Center, Inc. offers a variety of services to meet a variety of individual needs:

     LEARNING TO READ AND SPELL

Loranna Schwacofer, Director, is a Certified Instructor in the Barton Reading and Spelling System, which is specifically designed for people with dyslexia.  Because this is an in-depth, multi-sensory approach to reading, phonemic awareness, phonetic/decoding, and spelling skills, it works well with most students who are struggling with learning to read well.  Many struggling students are overlooked, or "fall through the cracks" in the school setting.  Comments such as, "He/She is fine, just give him/her more time," or, "He/she is quite bright, he/she won't qualify for special services," do not help a student meet his/her specific challenges. If you are interested in learning more about dyslexia we recommend that you visit the website:  www.brightsolutions.us.  You will find a great deal of valuable information and can listen to several webcasts defining dyslexia and what to do about it.  It is published by Susan Barton, the founder of the Barton Reading and Spelling System.

      READING COMPREHENSION

Often a student will be able to read fluently and accurately, but then, may be unable to recall details of what he/she has just read.  Sometimes this same student may have difficulty with math story problems, following verbal or written directions, understanding time, money, measurement, or non-digital clock time.  SPARKS Literacy Center, Inc. offers specific programs to help students make the connection between what has been heard, or read and what he/she needs to do to remember and retell that information.  When students make vivid pictures in their minds of what the words would "look like", then tell someone what they "see", rather than what they have "heard", they are on their way to better vocabulary, better comprehension, and better responses, both verbal and written.

     RESPONSE TO LITERATURE

A wonderful program developed by Adam and Missy Andrews, www.centerforlit.com , is designed to bring to life classical literature, using a model to help students structure their ideas, thoughts, and responses to any fictional work, from simple, classical, picture storybooks, to the well-loved classical novels from the ancient times to modern. SPARKS Literacy Center, Inc. is currently offering two small-group sessions, taught by Loranna Schwacofer.  New students may still join until a total of six students are in each class.  Tuesdays from 11:00-12:00 are for students in grades 5th to 8th grades.  Wednesdays from 8:00-9:00 a.m. are for students in 3rd to 5th grades.

The Director of the Center, Loranna Schwacofer, is a 30+ year California Credentialed Teacher.
